World Aquatics has once again demonstrated its dedication to inclusivity and unity as it celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP). This global initiative, observed on April 6th, has the theme “Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion,” highlighting the transformative power of sport in building bridges and breaking barriers.

Making Aquatics Accessible to All

World Aquatics is committed to ensuring that everyone can benefit from aquatic activities. Acknowledging the disparities in access to swimming facilities, the organization has rolled out initiatives such as the Pools for All program. Notably, the program celebrated a landmark achievement in 2024 with the opening of Bhutan’s highest competition-size swimming pool. This facility not only serves as a training ground for aspiring swimmers but also symbolizes the federation’s efforts to extend sport’s reach to remote regions.

Promoting Safety Through Education

Emphasizing the importance of water safety, World Aquatics launched the Discover Water initiative on World Drowning Prevention Day during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Designed for children aged 6 to 12, its educational tools benefit all ages, teaching critical life-saving skills and promoting safety. An increasing number of communities, like those in Malawi, are being reached, reflecting the program’s growing international impact.

Investing in Global Growth

World Aquatics does not only focus on competitive sport but also invests significantly in fostering worldwide aquatic development. In 2024 alone, US$4.5 million was allocated to expand the sport across 169 countries, positively affecting over 395,000 athletes. This initiative underlines their dedication to ensuring sustainable sport growth and accessibility.

International Day of Sport – A Global Celebration

Marking the significance of sport as a catalyst for change, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace provides an opportunity to spotlight how sports can drive social transformation, unite diverse communities, and contribute to peacebuilding efforts, as celebrated globally. According to Australasian Leisure Management, sport remains a vital instrument in promoting harmony and development worldwide.

By prioritizing inclusivity and sustainable development, World Aquatics continues to harness the power of water sports to connect and elevate communities globally. The future looks promising as ecosystems of aquatic activities emerge across different cultures and locales, reinforcing the universal language of sport.
