In a heartfelt tribute to a man whose legacy transcends the numbers on a scoreboard, Marshall University has announced the creation of the Red Dawson Endowment. This scholarship, established by the Big Green Scholarship Foundation, is set to make a significant impact on the lives of future football student-athletes at the university.

A Tribute to an Unwavering Legacy

“His legacy and impact on the football program at Marshall University is profound,” said Alicia Parker, associate director of Development for Endowments and Major Gifts for Marshall Athletics. Despite a coaching record of only 7-30-1, Red Dawson’s influence at Marshall University cannot be quantified merely by wins and losses. His name now adorns a scholarship emblematic of his unwavering dedication to the Thundering Herd.

The Remarkable Journey of Red Dawson

Hailing from Valdosta, Georgia, Dawson’s athletic journey began at Valdosta High School and saw him become an All-American at Florida State University. While he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1963, he chose to remain a student, eventually becoming a co-captain of the 1964 Seminoles alongside the legendary Fred Biletnikoff, leading the team to a stellar season.

From Tragedy to Triumph

A pivotal moment in Dawson’s life occurred on November 14, 1970. After narrowly avoiding the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of his fellow coaches, team members, and supporters, he was asked to lead the team as acting head coach. Despite the heartache, he bravely accepted the position, helping rebuild the team and shaping the future of the football program.

A Community Hero

Beyond the football field, Red Dawson’s legacy endures through his commitment to the Marshall community, including founding the Red Dawson Construction Company. According to marshallparthenon.com, his efforts have rightfully earned him the title of a beloved “Son of Marshall.”

Celebrating a Life Well Lived

Dawson’s contributions to the world of sports were recognized with his induction into the Florida State Hall of Fame in 1993. Today, his story continues to inspire. The establishment of the Red Dawson Endowment ensures that his spirit lives on, guiding future generations at Marshall University and offering hope to aspiring athletes.

This enduring tribute truly marks the stature of a legend—Red Dawson, whose legacy at Marshall University continues to resonate deeply in the hearts of many.
