news Apr 15, 2025

In a groundbreaking move to enhance Hong Kong’s presence on the international sports stage, the International World Games Association (IWGA) and the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic alliance, aimed at boosting Hong Kong’s role in The World Games, is set to redefine sports dynamics both regionally and globally.

A Vision of Cooperation and Growth

The MoU signifies a shared vision between IWGA and Hong Kong to promote The World Games, support elite athlete development, and innovate new collaborative ventures. According to The World Games, this partnership is not just about enhancing Hong Kong’s role but also aims to increase the IWGA’s global appeal by tapping into Hong Kong’s bustling sports community.

Success on the Horizon

Following the successful hosting of The World Games Series (TWG Series) in Hong Kong in October 2024, the city proved itself as a premier sports destination. The event marked Hong Kong’s growing involvement in global sports, attracting attention and fostering competitiveness within the region.

Hong Kong has consistently underlined its capabilities, with over 16 of its athletes qualifying for The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China, in eight different sports. Noteworthy achievements like CHEUNG Ka Wai’s gold medal in Snooker at The World Games 2022 bolster the nation’s sporting prestige.

Leaders Speak on the Partnership

José Perurena, IWGA President, shares his optimism, “Hong Kong has always been a valued member of The World Games Family. Our MoU with SF&OC is a recognition of Hong Kong’s contributions and a step forward in strengthening our presence in this key region.”

Meanwhile, SF&OC President, Timothy FOK Tsun Ting expresses hope: “This partnership will inspire more Hong Kong athletes to pursue their international sports dreams. We can’t wait to witness their shining moments in Chengdu this August.”

Future Prospects

This partnership is just the beginning, marking Hong Kong’s significant steps towards becoming an international sports hub. With 19 agreements with NOCs-NSOs already in place, IWGA is committed to elevating The World Games and fostering global ties with national sports bodies.

The Bigger Picture: The World Games

The IWGA, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, administers The World Games, a key multi-sport event showcasing around 35 sports and uniting over 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries every four years. The upcoming edition in Chengdu is expected to be a monumental event, reflecting the growing global impact of The World Games and the strengthening of international sporting ties.
