USF Bulls Show Their Heart: A Gift of Wheels and Memories
Meet the Heart of the USF Basketball Family
In the bustling corridors of the University of South Florida’s basketball programs, Barbara Riffe carries an affectionate title beyond her official role as an Administrative Specialist; she’s known affectionately as “Miss Barb.” Her unwavering support and warmth over the past 15 years have endeared her to both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. “We all love her,” praises head men’s basketball coach Bryan Hodgson. “It’s almost like having a second mother here at the office.”
A Leap of Gratitude
Miss Barb’s devotion extends beyond basketball, embracing her family with the same earnestness. Residing in Temple Terrace near her grandchildren, she was seeking a used golf cart to enjoy the neighborhood vibes with her two grandsons, Mason and Hayden, both of whom have autism and share a profound love for music. According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the moment Coach Hodgson learned of Miss Barb’s wish, his direction was clear—she wouldn’t bear the cost alone.
Team Effort, Team Heart
Hodgson, resonating personally with two sisters with autism, reached out to the team. Within moments, all 15 players agreed to contribute their NIL earnings to surprise Miss Barb. The gesture was as symbolic of their gratitude as it was practical. “She comes here every day to serve us non-stop and then goes home and serves her family,” Hodgson remarked.
The Day of Delight
It all culminated in a surprise where the players gathered in anticipation. “I see all the players lined up,” recalls Riffe. Coach Hodgson appeared around the corner, driving the new golf cart while the players cheered. Miss Barb’s joy was boundless; now not only did she have a new mode of transport but new ways to create joyous memories with her grandsons.
A Ride into Fond Memories
Decorated with lights and Bluetooth music, her golf cart is more than a vehicle; it’s a vessel of cherished moments with her grandsons. “It’s wonderful,” Miss Barb shares, as the sounds of laughter and music fill the streets of Temple Terrace.
A Legacy of Kindness
This mini-community tale is a testament not only to the kind hearts of the young athletes but to the significant impact a single individual can have on those around her. “These young men have hearts and are just such fine young men,” says a grateful Miss Barb.
USF’s basketball program has shown that its strength lies not only in skills and victories but in the unity and shared humanity that forms the backbone of this cherished community.
