Amid the biting chill of winter-like temperatures at the Erickson All-Sports Facility, the Parkersburg tennis teams entered the arena with determination and came out victorious, securing a commanding 7-0 sweep over their spirited rivals, Parkersburg South.

Climbing the Ladder of Challenge

With both teams facing a reshuffling due to other electives, players had to ascend the ranks and take on challenging new roles. “Depth-wise on the boys’ side, we have our top eight players all within a point of each other,” declared PHS coach Eric Stanley. This ability to adapt and thrive in the face of absence showcased the depth and unity of the team, granting them the upper hand in this intense rivalry.

Rising to the Occasion

Manny Tewodros, usually holding the No. 3 singles position, took on the mantle of leadership in his No. 1 singles match, triumphing 8-1 against Zach Farnsworth. Partnering with Truman Roberts, they further demonstrated their strength with an 8-3 victory in doubles. Reflecting on their recent success, Tewodros noted, “We know that in case someone’s gone, it’s the next person up. We all feel like we are at the same level.”

A Test of Chemistry and Skill

Parkersburg South’s dynamic duo, Farnsworth and Michael Kestner, though ultimately defeated, displayed remarkable synergy developed over years of collaboration. “We have really good call-outs and ball work,” Kestner shared. According to News and Sentinel, the unyielding spirit of both teams underlines the fierce dedication to the sport in the community.

Emerging Talent and Bright Futures

On the girls’ front, Liya Tewodros and Emma Stanley secured an 8-3 win in doubles, while Tewodros also fought through a challenging singles match, clinching victory with an 8-4 score. The Parkersburg girls’ team, despite being predominantly freshmen, showcased their potential against some of the toughest competitors in the region.

These younger athletes are gaining invaluable experience, with coach Stanley acknowledging the growing pains while expressing confidence in their future prospects. “It’s a bit of a challenge, and they have got to do some growing.”

In this exciting chapter of Parkersburg tennis history, both teams emerged not only as victors against their rivals but also as paragons of teamwork, resilience, and youthful promise.
