KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A beacon of excellence and tenacity, Sue Bird has once again elevated women’s basketball by being inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025 on Saturday, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

A Legacy Carved at UConn

Bird’s journey took flight with the UConn Women’s basketball team from 1998-2002, where she showcased unmatched leadership by guiding the Huskies to NCAA Championships twice, in 2000 and 2002 respectively. During her tenure, UConn Huskies conquered a remarkable eight BIG EAST championships, fueled by Bird’s prowess on the court.

Accolades and Records: A Testament to Greatness

Regarded as one of the most decorated players in college history, Bird clinched the prestigious Nancy Lieberman Award three times, honoring her as the nation’s top point guard. In 2002, lavish recognition encompassed her as she was named the Naismith Player of the Year, additionally securing the Wade Trophy, AP National Player of the Year, and USBWA National Player of the Year titles. Concluding her collegiate career, Bird amassed 1,378 points and 585 assists, maintaining records in 3-point field goal percentage (45.9) and free throw percentage (89.2).

An Unwavering Star in the WNBA

Upon graduating, Bird became UConn’s first-ever No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft, embarking on a 20-year career with the Seattle Storm, pivoting them to four WNBA Championships in 2004, 2010, 2018, and 2020. As a 13-time All-Star and leading assist champion with 3,234 assists, Seattle retired her beloved No. 10 jersey in honor of her contributions.
