Plattsburgh State Welcomes Hall of Famer as New Women's Tennis Coach
Heartfelt Return to Coaching
Chris Waterbury, a celebrated name in Plattsburgh State Athletics, is stepping into a new role as the women’s tennis coach. Known for his profound impact within collegiate sports, Waterbury’s return is not just a comeback; it’s a homecoming that reflects his dedication to the Cardinals. As stated in Sun Community News, the appointment was joyfully announced on August 8 by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation.
Passion Meets Experience
Mike Howard, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, expresses enthusiastic support for Waterbury’s return. “His extensive coaching experience, passion for the game of tennis, and love for Cardinal Athletics will certainly be tremendous additions to both the tennis program and our entire coaching staff.” With this blend of passion and experience, Waterbury is poised to inspire a new era for the team.
Changes Within the Program
In this role, Waterbury will oversee practices, competitions, and recruiting for the program. Kelci Henn, the former head coach from 2021 to 2025, will remain involved in a new capacity, transitioning to the Athletic Operations Assistant and Coordinator of Tennis. Her continued involvement ensures a seamless transition and continuity within the program.
A Legacy of Excellence
Waterbury’s coaching legacy is monumental. Previously, he built Plattsburgh State men’s soccer into a regional and national force over 33 years, earning a spot in the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. His tenure as men’s soccer coach saw the team win eight SUNYAC titles and earn 11 NCAA Division III Tournament qualifications, reaching the semifinals in 2005.
