basketball May 15, 2025

In a move that signals a significant transition for Morehouse College’s basketball program, Larry Dixon has been appointed as the 14th head men’s basketball coach. This new era is marked by Dixon’s illustrious past in collegiate basketball, as he becomes the first head coach from outside the Arthur McAfee coaching lineage since 1965.

A Welcome Change

The announcement was made official by Harold Ellis, Director of Athletics at Morehouse, highlighting the milestone move. “We are thrilled to welcome Coach Dixon to the Morehouse family,” Ellis noted. “Larry brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective that aligns with our mission to achieve excellence both on and off the court.”

A Stalwart in Collegiate Coaching

Dixon’s impressive career spans over two decades at various Division I programs. With notable positions at institutions like North Carolina State and others such as South Florida, Georgia Southern, and Winthrop University, his prowess in defense and talent development is well recognized. During his tenure, Dixon has been associated with three NCAA tournament berths and multiple championships, including an ACC Tournament win in 2023-24.

Bridging Tradition and Innovation

For the first time in 60 years, Morehouse’s basketball program steps outside the McAfee coaching tree, embracing Dixon’s fresh yet deep-rooted strategic approach. Importantly, Dixon is the first to hold this role since World War II, not coming directly from McAfee’s legacy. The appointment is seen as a blend of honoring past traditions while paving the way for new achievements.

A Legacy of Excellence Awaits

Expressing his enthusiasm, Dixon stated, “I’m honored and excited to lead one of the most respected programs in HBCU basketball. I look forward to building on the existing legacy and working with young men who strive for excellence.”

His official introduction is set to take place at a press conference on Monday, May 19, at 10 AM at Forbes Arena, promising to be a memorable event for the Morehouse community.

As stated in HoopDirt, this pivotal appointment marks not just a change in leadership but a profound opportunity for growth and continued excellence for the Maroon Tigers.

With Dixon’s diverse experience and a passion for mentorship, Morehouse is poised to continue its tradition of excellence on the court while nurturing future leaders off it. The basketball community eagerly awaits this promising new chapter.
