In an inspiring initiative, Lufkin’s high school girls basketball program hosted a four-day camp this week at the Panther Activity Center. The event was a rallying point for more than 20 young female athletes ranging from second to eighth grade, who came together to hone their skills under the expert guidance of seasoned coaches and high school players.
Nurturing Future Stars through Immersive Training
The camp, expertly orchestrated by Lufkin coaches SaDale Lamb, Kassie Jones, Amber Carver, along with former Lady Panther Kelby Coutee, was a robust blend of essential drills, skill-building activities, and competitive spirals. According to The Lufkin Daily News, these efforts culminated in an enriched experience aimed at elevating the campers’ grasp on the game.
Coaches’ Dedication: A Path to Excellence
“We’ve done a lot of different things this week. We started with fundamental footwork, gradually intensifying with passing, dribbling, and shooting,” Coach Jones explained. The focus was on providing a progressive learning environment, adapting through each session to ensure the kids not only learned but also enjoyed the game.
Hands-on Learning and Fun
Keeping the spirits high, the camp also integrated conditioning into the routine. As the campers maneuvered between drills, the importance of fitness and agility was a ripe lesson imparted by the mentors. “We also did some shooting drills, worked on passing and footwork as well,” Jones reflected, echoing the structured yet flexible approach adopted throughout the event.
Building Bonds: High School Team’s Involvement
One of the highlights was the involvement of the high school players, who acted as mentors and role models for the attendees. Their participation was instrumental in bridging the campers’ experience with real-game scenarios, fostering an environment of camaraderie and encouragement.
Culminating in Progress
As the camp concluded, the progression in skills was decidedly evident. Coach Jones, observing the marked improvement, noted, “We elevated every single day, and I think the girls have gotten better each day with those stations, and we can see them progress.”
This basketball camp was more than just an athletic session; it was a testament to community spirit, teamwork, and the undying passion for nurturing the next generation of basketball enthusiasts in Lufkin.
