Catalan pit bull. The legendary Spanish defender and former Barca captain celebrates his anniversary today

Carles Puyol Zaforkada was born on 13 April 1978 in the Spanish city of Pobla de Segur. Today he is 45 years old. The former footballer mainly played as a central defender, but he could also play on both flanks of the defence, mainly on the right.

Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, he was distinguished by his toughness, colourful appearance, outstanding professionalism and dedication. Carles spent his entire career at the Spanish club Barcelona, was the team captain from 2004 to 2014, played 682 matches and scored 23 goals. He has won all possible trophies with the Catalans, and more than once.

Puyol also played for the Spanish national team and held the position of vice-captain. Carles is a European (2008) and world (2010) champion.
